New Born Sleep Patterns
The first thing some Mums discover quickly about new borns and sleep is that they do not
necessarily sleep! It is very unusual for a new born to sleep all night,
although some new borns can sleep through for six to eight hours within the
first months of life. New born sleep patterns can change constantly, and as soon
as you think you are in sync with your babies sleep patterns, they will change
their pattern again.Although new mums will find themselves sleep deprived and
tired most of the time, just remember, it does get better! Everything is a phase
or a stage, and if you can see over the next hurdle and make it with a smile on
your face, your doing really well.
New born sleep attitude
Babies are very sensitive to what is going on around them. If you are
stressed and upset, your child will absorb some of this emotion and also become
distressed. Try to create a calm, soothing environment for your baby at all
times, but especially at the time you are putting them down to sleep. Stoking
and massaging your baby, singing a lullaby and talking softly can really help to
calm your baby. A warm bath is also good.
Be flexible and adapt
The key is to be flexible and adapt your behavior to suit the needs of your
new born.
If your current daytime or nighttime routine is not working for you, think about
what changes you can make in your lifestyle that will make it
easier for your baby to get to sleep. It may seem like the new born is suddenly
controlling your schedule and sometimes even your entire life, so it is also
important for you to find ways for you and your partner to spend quality time
together, and for you to try and get some time for yourself.
Adopting baby sleeping techniques
Be careful before you choose a baby sleep training method, as many of them can
force you to
overlook your own biological cues. If you opt for traditional baby training methods such as
letting your baby cry for long periods of time, make sure you research all the
negative repercussions of this technique. You may lose sight your own judgment,
by instead following the guidance of
something that may not be right for your baby, or for you.
Don’t forget that as the mother
of a new born that you possess natural abilities to understand your new born and
all of their needs whether it be for food, comfort or sleep. And more
importantly, you ultimately need to do whatever works for you and your baby -
regardless of any advice or information you read. |
